Robert L. Murphy's Obituary
Robert L. Murphy “Big Murph”, 72 of Fairfield Twp., passed away Saturday evening at his home with his loving family by his side and under the care of Hospice. He had been in declining health for the past few months.
Born July 15, 1948 in Fairmont, West Virginia he was the son of the late Mattie Woods, the grandson of the late Waymon and Marie Murphy, whom raised him from an early age, and the husband of Rosa Lee (Prosser) Murphy.
Big Murph came to the Bridgeton area in 1966 seeking employment and worked for 10 years at Owens Illinois Glass Company. He was employed until his retirement with Laborors Local 222 Construction working at the Salem Nuclear Plant for over 20 years. He was a faithful member of Union Baptist Temple Church in Bridgeton where he sang with the Men’s Choir and served as an Usher. For over 30 years he served as a Firefighter with the Gouldtown Fire Company, Station 15, and also with the Cumberland County Fire Police. Big Murph also worked part time for over 20 years with the former Wesley Funeral Home in Bridgeton, a job he enjoyed, as he was a people person who loved interaction. He was a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and he loved his pickup trucks, especially his Harley Davidson Edition Ford F 150. Murphy was a kind and gentle soul with a heart as big as himself, he was a devoted husband, stepfather, and grandfather, and will be missed by all who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his wife Rosa Lee Murphy, his step daughters, Cynthia Brown and husband Gordon, Shirley Ann Wright and husband Dennis, one brother Waymon Murphy, three sisters, Helen Beck, Ethel Stewart, Carol Woods, four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and six Godchildren. Besides his mother and grandparents, he was predeceased by his step daughter Tammie Haynes.
Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Sunday June 6, 2021 at 1:00pm from the ALMS Center 1 Martin Luther King Way Bridgeton, NJ. A viewing will be held from 11:00am till 1:00 prior to the services. The interment will take place in Fernwood Memorial Park, Hopewell Twp.
