JoAnn Carney's Obituary
Jo-Ann Carney was born December 20, 1955, to Doris Carney and the late Herbert Carney, in New Jersey. She transitioned from this life on July 27, 2022. She was educated in the New Jersey school system and graduated Bridgeton High School in 1974.
In her later years, Jo-Ann loved to be in her kitchen trying new recipes and feeding her family and loved ones. She especially loved baking and was the “go to” for all the good stuff to be prepared for family functions. She enjoyed watching the cooking shows and she would have her To Do List pages (off the refrigerator) ready to write something down she wanted to make later. From pies, cookies, breads and cakes she remembered everyone’s favorites and made sure they received it at each family gathering. She also loved to go shopping and found the perfect gifts or something for home every time. She volunteered at Millville Public Charter School, were her grandchildren and great- grandchildren attended school, during book fairs, field days, Halloween trunk or treat or any event she could help with in some way. She looked forward to the annual events such as: cousin retreat in Lancaster, PA- the family reunion at Lum’s Pond in DE-and The Nanticoke Indian Pow Wow in NJ.
Jo-Ann worked in retail management for Bradley’s, Macy’s, Ames, Family Dollar and lastly Dollar Tree where she retired. Over the years, she was addressed by her staff as Momma Jo from the strong work family bonds she formed and extended family she created.
Jo-Ann was preceded in death by her father, Herbert Carney Sr., as well as her siblings, Michael Carney, Martin Carney Sr., Herbert Bard, Presley Carney, Richard Carney and Patricia Feeney. Jo-Ann is survived by her mother, Doris Carney of Pennsylvania, her husband Ronald Smith Sr. of Bridgeton, and her daughter Danielle CarneyThurston (Scott) of Vineland, and her son Ryan Carney (Stephanie) of Bridgeton; grandchildren, Tye Carney of Vineland, Unique Bowens- Dabone (Moumouni) of Newark, Danielle Bowens of Millville, Onjah Owens of Bridgeton, and Tyrone Wright Jr. of Vineland; great-grandchildren Nyla, Winter, Lay’lanie, Kaleeyah, Raequan Jr., Phoenix; a host of brother and sisters, Herbert Carney of W. Virginia, Norman Carney (Annette) and Dennis Carney (Julie) of Delaware, Theodore Carney and Katheryn Clark (Douglas) of New Jersey, Wayne Carney and Peggy Carney of Missouri, Louise Doyle of Pennsylvania, Doris “Marie” Bard of Virginia, Wanda Carney McConnell (Anthony) and Stephanie Carney of California, Donna Pritchett (Vance) of Nevada and Natalie Carney of Louisiana; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. Jo-Ann was an active and beloved member in her family and will be greatly missed.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday August 6, 2022 at the funeral home from 11:00 till 1:00 pm. Cremation will take place privately following the visitation.
