Eugene N Hill's Obituary
Eugene Nathan Hill, known to many as Gene or DJ Gene, entered into the care of the Lord on Saturday, November 15, 2025, in Bridgeton, New Jersey. He was born on Saturday, August 16, 1941, to the late Rev. William and Lelia Frazier Hill. Gene was a lifelong resident of Bridgeton. He was a graduate of Bridgeton High School, Class of 1959, and attended Wilberforce University in Xenia, Ohio, from 1959 to 1961. He later served his country with honor in the United States Army from 1963 to 1968 during the Vietnam era, receiving an honorable discharge. Gene was married to Geraldine “Gerrie” Battle-Hill, his faithful and devoted wife. Their bond was steady, lasting, and built on partnership, respect, and a shared commitment to God, love, family, community and watching sunrises and sunsets.
Gene’s voice became known across New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania during his years in radio. He worked as a News and Weather Announcer for WSNJ 107.7 FM and 1240 AM from 1968 to 1972, where he also hosted the Harlem Nocturne Show. His theme song, What Does It Take To Win Your Love by Jr. Walker and the All-Stars, became a signature sound to his listeners. He earned his Radio Operator License and trained in broadcast engineering under Paul Alger and Paul Hunsberger. DJ Gene returned to WSNJ in 1998 and remained until the station closed in 2004. Gene also spent more than fifty years in the culinary field. His career included work at Hickory Steak House, Ranch Hope for Boys, Camp Roosevelt Boy Scouts of America, Winchester Inn in Cape May, and Leesburg Golf Country Club in Virginia. He continued his culinary journey at the Golden Nugget and Tropicana Casinos in Atlantic City, where he eventually retired. Gene also owned and operated Ribicus Maximus Barbecue, sharing his love of food with the community. A proud Philadelphia Eagles fan, Gene supported his team with passion. Whether they won, lost, or tied, his favorite never wavered. However, he also had a secondary team, the Buffalo Bills, whom he affectionately called his “Bonus Team.”
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. William Hill Sr. and Lelia Frazier Hill, his siblings William Jr., James, Lawrence, Thomas Hill, and his sister C. Louise and grandson Darious Jackson.
Gene is survived by his devoted wife Geraldine Battle-Hill. He is also survived by his brother Robert and wife Eliane Hill, and sister-in-law Suzie Hill (Thomas). He leaves behind his children Phillippe and wife Amanda, Ronnell Jackson, and his stepsons Eric Dawkins and Robert Dawkins. He was a proud grandfather to De’sean, Shaniah, Brihanna, Mackenzie Hill, Alexia, Yazier, Valencia, Amiyah, Noah, Nasir, Marquise, Arric, and AS’Shyon Dawkins. Gene was also blessed with great-grandchildren Serenity Muse, Audamis Dawkins, and Adelina File, and his Godson (nephew), Alfred Hill. He leaves a large host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family, and friends.
