Sonya Sonnie MacFarland's Obituary
Sonya “Sonnie” MacFarland, 81 of Mullica Hill, went to be with her Savior early Wednesday morning March 4, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Sonnie was born February 13, 1939 in Bridgeton, NJ to the late Homer C. and Geneva Chew MacFarland. She grew up in Woodbury and had also previously lived in Richwood.
Sonnie was employed for several years in the Healthcare industry; she was a Physical Therapist retiring in 1998 where she was lastly employed with the offices of Dr. Haines, Boyson and Brown. She loved her work, but was also very active in her church, Pittsgrove Baptist Church. When asked about the things she enjoyed in life she responded being active in Campfire Girls, Brownies and Girl Scouting, Tri Hi Y, HBA (HS Born-Again), Christian Youth Groups, singing in Choir, Glee Club, Girls Chorus at many levels, the Citizenship Institute, National Honor Society, Delta Rho, Teaching swimming, Lifesaving, Water Safety and Handicap Swimming for the Red Cross for 10 years, APTA regional secretary, Chief Guide for the Pioneers Girls of First Baptist Church Woodbury for 9 years, taking part in Masters Swim Meets, Many Many years of teaching Sunday School, AWANA Pittsgrove Baptist, singing with the Gloucester County Community Choir, Canoeing, Kayaking with the Mohawk, South Jersey, and Sierra Canoe Clubs, Horseback riding, Camping, Gardening, lots of Traveling, but mostly being with her family. She was courageous to the end and has fought the good fight. Rest in Peace with the Lord Sonnie. Surviving her is her brother Rev. Stephen R. MacFarland and his wife Frances of Mullica Hill, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and her church family. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Monday March 9. 2020 at 11:00am from the Upper Pittsgrove Baptist Church 368 Daretown Road , Elmer, NJ. Sonnie's pastor Rev. Joe Schneider and cousin Rev. Aleksander Saar will officiate. The interment will be in the family plot in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Elmer. A viewing will be held at the church prior to the services from 9:00 till 11:00am.
