Ruth led a gracious life. ‘No good is ever lost’ she would say, and over her 95 years she brightened the world around her. Ruth was wise and possessed a deep sense of fairness. She was sweet, mannerly, and hospitable and her easy laugh and humor set everyone at ease. She weathered loss with a deep belief in healing.
Ruth’s life’s work was her family. She was married to William M. Thompson, Jr. for 43 years and they loved each other deeply. She had an inherent gift with children and was a devoted and nurturing mother to her four children. She later worked with her husband Bill in his law practice. Ruth shared her talents and kind heart as a volunteer with community programs for children and as a Hospice volunteer. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher and as a deacon. She had an eye for beauty and was a talented flower gardener and accomplished at sewing and hand work.
Ruth was the daughter of Esther Powell Sortore and Emerson Sortore and was predeceased by her sister, Jane Sortore Lindenthal (husband Jack) and brother Kimball Sortore (wife Judy). She is survived by her children, Peter D. Thompson, William M. Thompson III and wife Kate, Martha Thompson Baur and husband August, and Suzanne P. Thompson and husband Gabriele Onorato. She had six grandchildren, August P. Baur (wife Brittany), Andrew P. Baur (fiancée Sarah), Anna Onorato Ingram (husband Clint), William Onorato, Jimmy Thompson, and Bobby Thompson and two great grandchildren, August E. Baur and Elias Baur. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Jean T. Weiler and she is affectionately remembered by her many nieces and nephews.
Ruth’s family is grateful for the staff at Friends Village at Woodstown, who cared for Ruth during her last years, and Hospice who facilitated her peaceful passing.
To honor Ruth’s memory, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice, c/o Ennoble Care, 227 Laurel Road, Suite 104, Voorhees NJ, 08043.
