Robert J. "Sonny" King's Obituary
Robert J. ‘Sonny' King 76 of Gouldtown, passed away in his sleep early Wednesday morning October 10, 2012 at his home.
Born in Fairfield Twp., he was the son of the late Lewis B. and Anna Marie (nee Hayes) King and the husband of Anna (nee Richmond) King. Sonny had been a resident of the Gouldtown area nearly all of his life.
Sonny was formerly employed with the Laborers International Union of America Local 222 whom he worked for 25 years, many of those years working on the construction of Artificial Island in Lower Alloway Creek. He was a long time member of the John Wesley United Methodist Church in Port Norris and a United States Marine Corps veteran serving during the Korean War. He had also served in the National Guard at the age of 15 prior to his enlistment in the Marine Corp., as one of the Magnificent Seven of Bridgeton. At an early age, his mother taught him to cook, and it was a passion he had all of his life. Sonny also enjoyed hunting and fishing, but mostly he loved helping people in need. His warm smile and pleasant disposition will truly be missed by many.
Besides his wife Anna, he is survived by four sons Vaughn King and his wife Nina of Bridgeton, Jonathon King of the Virgin Islands, Ronald King and his wife Barbara of Pennsylvania, and Mark King, three daughters, Delase Tard and her husband Elijah III of West Deptford, Tiliya Rilley and her husband Charles of Millville, and Robin Watford of Seabrook, one brother Jay B. King and his wife Priscilla of Gouldtown, three sisters Patricia Pierce and her husband James of Gouldtown, Shirla Lewis of Philadelphia, and Betsy Brown and her husband Headley of Millville, 19 grandchildren 8 great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and various relatives.
He was predeceased by two sons Robert King and Jason T. King, two brothers Wayne King and Byron King, and four sisters, Joan Dixon, Jean Flemmings, Lorene Denby, and Priscilla Gross.
Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Wednesday morning
October17, 2012 from Glory Tabernacle Church, 1018 Buckshutem Road Bridgeton, NJ. Bishop Designate David A. Hadley will officiate. The interment will take place in Gouldtown Memorial Park, Fairfield Twp.
Friends may call on Wednesday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the services.
