Portia H. Johnson's Obituary
Portia H. Johnson 86, of Bridgeton passed away suddenly Sunday evening April 18, 2010 at home with her son and daughter in law by her side. She had been in failing health for the past four months.
Born in Freetown Siera Leon East Africa, she was the daughter of the late Solomon Porter Hood and her late adopted mother here in the United States, Irene Grimes. She was the wife of the late Father William G. Johnson Sr. who passed away in 1993. Portia was a long time resident of the Bridgeton area and had also lived in Bermuda, Gouldtown, Philadelphia, and Boston, often moving due to her husband 's pastoral duties in the church. She was formally trained as a nurse in the Bridgeton Hospital Nursing program and worked for several years in the hospital and also previously sat as a member on the hospital board. She continued her education and taught school in both the Fairfield Twp. and Bridgeton School systems. She was a long time member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Bridgeton. She enjoyed dining out and going on bus trips. She will be sadly missed by many. Surviving her to cherish her memory is her only son William G. Johnson Jr. and his wife Rebecca Pierce Johnson of Bridgeton and three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
