Peter Naruszewicz's Obituary
Peter Naruszewicz, 78, of Bridgeton, NJ, passed away on September 26, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on June 17, 1947, Peter was the son of the late Richard S. and Mary A. (McDermontt) Naruszewicz. He grew up in Somerville, MA.
In 1968, Peter joined the United States Army, serving his country during the Vietnam War. He was assigned to the 61st Assault Helicopter Company, where he served bravely as a door gunner from 1968 to 1969—a time that shaped his enduring commitment to his fellow veterans. His experience in Vietnam deeply influenced the path he would later take, dedicating much of his life to helping others heal.
After his military service, Peter pursued higher education with passion and purpose, eventually earning a Master’s degree in Guidance. He went on to have a 35-year career as a guidance counselor and social worker, during which he touched the lives of countless students, families, and individuals in need. His work was driven by empathy, making a difference in the lives of others. Peter also dedicated time to counseling fellow veterans, using his own experiences to guide and support those who had walked similar paths.
Peter was compassionate, generous, curious, and blessed with a sharp wit and an unmistakably unique sense of humor.
He is survived by his cherished daughter, Nina Naruszewicz—lovingly known to him as “Wonderful One”—and her husband, Scott Burger, both of Richmond, VA. He also leaves behind his dear sister, Frances DiGregorio, and her husband, Leslie, of Somerville, MA; nephews Jamie and Jeff DiGregorio; former wife, Janet Scalen of Mays Landing; and many friends and former colleagues who will miss his wisdom, humor, and companionship. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Naruszewicz, and his sister, Lorraine Jennings.
Peter will be remembered as a father, a friend, a veteran, and a counselor. His life was one of service, love, and laughter, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know him.
Thank you to Red Oak Hospice, especially nurses Jessica and Ebony, and the staff of Maurice House in Millville, NJ, for providing care and comfort at the end of Peter’s life.
“May the light of God brighten all your days!”
