John "Herbie" Tompkins Jr's Obituary
John Herbert Tompkins Jr., lovingly known as “Herbie,” passed away on June 29, 2026, at the Maurice House in Millville, NJ. Born on December 9, 1941, in Bridgeton, NJ, Herbie lived a life marked by service, dedication, and deep devotion to his family and community.
Herbie graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1960 and soon after began his proud service in the United States Air Force. From 1960 to 1966, he served as an Airman First Class and worked as a Military Police Airman. During his military career, he was selected as one of eight Honor Guards for the President of the Philippines, a distinction he carried with honor.
During the Cuban Missile Crisis, Herbie was deployed to Homestead, Florida, where he guarded aircraft and had the remarkable opportunity to meet President John F. Kennedy and Senator Barry Goldwater.
After completing his military service, Herbie continued his education at Cape May County Vocational School in 1967, studying welding and blueprint reading.
Herbie dedicated more than 45 years to Cumberland County, NJ—25 years with the Mosquito Commission and 20 years as Road Department Supervisor. His work ethic, reliability, and commitment to public service left a lasting impact on the county he served.
In 1965, Herbie joined West Park Methodist Church, remaining a faithful member for over 60 years.
On September 9, 1961, Herbie married the love of his life Joanne Nasuti, and together they shared 57 years of marriage before her passing in 2017. He was predeceased by his parents, John Tompkins Sr. and Naoma Banks Tompkins Schrieber, his wife Joanne, and his brother‑in‑law John Weber.
He is survived by his sisters Ellen Sweatt (Dan) of Snellville, GA, and Kay Weber of Elsinboro, NJ; his sister‑in‑law Maryanne Nasuti of Millville, NJ; his nephews Jeremy Sweatt (Renee') of West Hartford, CT, Brian Sweatt (Barbara) of Eagleville, TN, Joshua Weber (Kim) of Elsinboro, NJ, and Michael Nasuti; his nieces Suellen Stroup (Rob) of Lake Mills, WI, and Bethany Hannah (Christian) of Pennsville, NJ; along with many great‑nieces, great‑nephews, and a large extended family who loved him dearly.
Herbie will be remembered for his steady kindness, his unwavering work ethic, and the gentle humor that endeared him to everyone he met. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Maurice House and Sun Crest Hospice for their wonderful care, compassion, and support.
Graveside services will be held at the Cumberland County Veteran’s Cemetery in Bridgeton, NJ, on July 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
