Mr. Stermen was my 4th grade teacher at Myron L. Powell Elementary School. He had an indelible positive impact on my life. He expected a lot and pushed us. He made it clear to my parents they should expect more of me. I think of him often and have always been grateful he was my teacher during what was a difficult time for my family. I credit him for much of my future academic success.
I also recall his love of music and he exposed the class to types of music I never heard at home. He even gave me a classical music album I played repeatedly at home and grew to love. He introduced us to Broadway musicals. He wrote a play we performed for the Christmas season. He was an exceptional educator and what he taught me lives on in me and my children as well.
