Jacob Davis Sr.'s Obituary
Jacob Davis Sr. of Bridgeton transitioned early Monday evening on April 15, 2024, after celebrating his 96 birthday two days prior.
Born in Perkins Georgia, on April 13, 1928, he was the 4th son of the late King and Dora (Thomas) Davis to a family of 12 siblings. He arrived in the Bridgeton area at 17 and left it nearly 80 years later.
“Jake” as he was known, started his employment as a Porter at the Cumberland Hotel. He worked for 27 years at the former Owens-Illinois Glass Plant in Bridgeton, until he formed his own business, Jake Davis Sr. Moving and Delivery in 1958. He was small in stature but had a huge heart for people. While he was totally dedicated to his business, he was also a long-time servant of the Lord in several churches in the area. At Trinity AME Church, Gouldtown, he served as an Usher and sang in the Men’s Chorus. He also sang with the South Jersey Community Gospel Choir. He was a life member of the “John Porter-First State “Tuskegee Airman Chapter. In 2016, he was inducted into the Cumberland County Black Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his children Jacob Davis Jr. of Bridgeton, Monroe Davis of Vorhees, Dora Stocks of Bridgeton, Paulette Motley (William) of North Carolina, his siblings Easter Archie of Georgia, Florine Davis of Bridgeton, Sisters in love Earlease Davis of New York, Grace Davis of California. His grandchildren are Gordon Davis, Bruce Covington, Tammy Holden, Jacob Antwain Davis, Tia Stocks, Edward Davis, Ashley Davis, Sade Davis, Teron Stocks, William “Trey” Motley, and Cerise Motley.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three children, Anna Davis, Bruce Davis, and Frank Davis, his siblings Johnnie Mae Moses Ford, King Davis Jr., Louvonia Davis Hart, Elijah Davis, Andrew Davis Sr., Egypt Davis, Louise Sapp, Orange Davis, and Frank Davis.
Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing from 10:00 am – Noon, and the funeral services at Noon on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Trinity AME Church, Gouldtown, Rt 49. Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Michael Keene will officiate. The interment will be in Fordville Memorial Park, Fairfield Twp. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Jake’s memory to Trinity AME Church. 1107 Bridgeton Millville Pike, Bridgeton , NJ 08302
