Hannah C. Garrison's Obituary
Hannah Chew Garrison 95, of Bridgeton, passed away Sunday evening March 24, 2013 at the home of her daughter, Nancy with whom she had resided the past two years. Mrs. Garrison was the wife of the late Robert Minch Garrison who died in 1988, and was the owner of the Garrison Funeral Home in Bridgeton.
She was born in Bridgeton, the daughter of the late Walton and Bertha Hendrickson Chew. Mrs. Garrison graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1935, and was employed as secretary to the president of the former Martin Dye and Finishing Corporation. She then became a full time homemaker, raising her family and assisting her husband in the family funeral business.
Mrs. Garrison was a long time member of the Dallas Lore Sharp Nature Club, and was the oldest living charter member of the former Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church, which is now New Hope Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School, typed the church bulletins, and served as president of the Missionary Society. She hosted home Bible studies, and was also an officer in the N.J. Women’s Presbyterial.
Surviving her are her three daughters Nancy Saar and her husband Paul of Bridgeton, Susan Sray and her husband William of Pittsburgh, PA, and Ellen Rottschafer and her husband John of Gowen, Michigan, twelve grandchildren, Laura Candela, Aleksander and Christopher Saar, Robert Garrison, Elizabeth Bender, Deborah Morris, William, Mark, and Karen Sray, Jennifer Overvoorde, Lori VanderPloeg, and Benjamin Rottschafer, 16 great grandchildren, one sister Geneva MacFarland of Mullica Hill, two brothers Joseph Chew of Cleveland, Ohio, William Chew of Montana, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son Paul Garrison in 2005, and her granddaughter Carolyn Garrison.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Saturday March 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. from the New Hope Presbyterian Church, 65 Hitchner Ave. Hopewell Twp. with her former pastor Rev. Glenn Evans officiating, assisted by Rev. Claude Taylor, pastor of New Hope Presbyterian Church, and her grandson , Pastor Aleksander Saar, of the First Baptist Church, Bridgeton. Friends may call Saturday morning one hour prior to the services at the church. The burial will take place in the family plot at Overlook Cemetery, Bridgeton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bridgeton Christian School, 25 Central Ave. Bridgeton, NJ or to New Hope Presbyterian Church, 65 Hitchner Ave. Bridgeton, NJ 08302.
