I had the honor and privilege to coach Freddie along with his brother Josh during their football days at Cumberland Regional. As most athletes and coaches can tell you, the scores of games as well as the number of wins and losses fade with time. What does not wane is the impression one makes or recalls about those he played with, played for, or coached. It becomes their legacy of sorts. What I remember about Freddie, who was not the biggest, strongest, or fastest, is his work ethic. He never settled for good enough, never allowed himself to be satisfied, and always placed the team ahead of himself. He was the consummate teammate. He was funny, serious, and most importantly was a quality young man. The elder brother of “the Stenger boys”, he set a positive example not just for Josh, but for those who like him had to work to achieve. We will not remember Freddie for his catches, tackles, or touchdowns. However, his character, indelibly etched in the memories of those who knew and miss him will endure. This is his legacy; one I will always remember and appreciate.
