Evelyn A. Husted nee Hiles 88 of Quarryville died Wednesday May 7, 2008 in Lancaster General Hospital , Lancaster, PA.
Born in Millville, NJ on November 29, 1919, she was the daughter of the late W. Barton Jr., and Alice nee Horn Hiles. She had been a resident of Quarryville for several years. Even though she attended many different schools due to her father's work, she graduated from Bridgeton High School a year early. She became a very efficient secretary who worked for the Ferracute Machine Company, the William Thomas Athey Agency, and the Bridgeton Board of Education from where she retired after many years of service in After Jan's retirement from the A&P, they spent several years traveling to various parts of the world. They met many wonderful friends during this time, two of whom they traveled with and maintained a friendship until their deaths. One of the highlights of the trips for Evelyn was visiting some of the places in Germany where Jan had been during the war. In recent years, she has derived great pleasure following her granddaughter Christy's travels around the world as she worked on a floating university. Giving up her home and friends in Bridgeton and moving to Quarryville was traumatic for Evelyn, but they made many wonderful friends there and were able to maintain an active lifestyle for many years. The kindness of so many of the staff members there gave Evelyn and Jan both a great deal of comfort and pleasure. Evelyn was known for her kind and caring attitude and for her love of pets, starting with her first cat Chummy and ending with weekly visits from her devoted visitor Zoe. Zoe's owner Al Brinson also provided many hours of devoted care and companionship which Evelyn thoroughly enjoyed. The highlight of her week was traveling in her wheelchair with Zoe in her lap. She will be remembered as a wonderful Christian, who was a devoted wife, grandmother, terrific friend and would have been a wonderful great grandmother.1982. During this time, one of her interesting sidelines was to teach the Bridgeton Police Dept. typing. On a blind date she met her beloved husband Charles Janvier Husted to whom she was married for 63 years. They had a daughter Priscilla H. Cunningham who gave them two granddaughters Christine Leslie Cunningham and Rebecca Lynn Mannel. Becky and her husband Daniel Scot Mannel just recently presented her with a great-grandson Zachary Janvier Mannel.
