Brenda Bailey's Obituary
Brenda E. Bailey, a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, at the age of 85, surrounded by family at her home in Atlanta, GA.
Born August 9, 1940, she was the eldest daughter of Alex and Beryl Coles of New Jersey. Brenda attended elementary and secondary schools in Salem County, New Jersey and was a graduate of Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. Brenda’s career as an elementary school teacher began in the Vineland, New Jersey public school system, and spanned more than 30 years as a dedicated educator touching the lives of hundreds of children. She was deeply committed not only to her students’ academic success, but also to their social and emotional well-being. Known for her patience and steady encouragement, she believed every child deserved to be supported and guided toward their fullest potential.
She met her husband, Radcliffe Bailey, Sr. while in high school. After a lengthy courtship, they married in 1964. Their union was one of complete devotion to each other and to their two sons, the late Radcliffe O. Bailey, Jr. and Roy A. Bailey. The family moved from New Jersey to Atlanta, Georgia in 1972 where they made the peach state their home.
She shared nearly 60 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Radcliffe (Raddy) until his passing in 2023. Their life together was a testament to love, partnership, and devotion. Together they built a strong family foundation, raising two sons, and later delighting in the joy of four grandchildren, who were among Brenda’s greatest treasures.
Family was the center of everything Brenda did. She was a gifted and joyful cook who expressed her love through food. Her holiday meals and family gatherings were cherished traditions, bringing family and friends together around a table, where warmth, laughter and love were always present.
Independent and self-sufficient for most of her life, she remained active and engaged until her recent illness. Brenda was a patron of the arts and a frequent visitor to the High Museum. She often accompanied her son, Radcliffe, to art shows and exhibits, and over the years compiled an impressive collection of artwork by inspiring young artists. She also enjoyed spending time with friends on lunch outings, trips to the casino, and attending weekly exercise classes. These moments of fellowship and activity reflected her lively spirit.
A member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, she drew strength from her faith and was known for her quiet, steady presence. She was the matriarch of the family, providing a source of wisdom, stability, and unconditional love that will continue for generations. Brenda will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit and dedication to her family. She leaves behind a legacy of devotion and strength that will be cherished forever by those who knew her.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Radcliffe Bailey, Jr. She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Roy A. Bailey of Atlanta, four grandchildren Bria Bailey, Olivia Bailey, Joi Bailey and Coles Bailey all of Atlanta, Georgia; a sister, Karen Roache of West Chester, Pennsylvania; two brothers- in- law, John Bailey and William Johnson both of Bridgeton, New Jersey; many nieces, nephews, cousins; extended family and dear friends.
