Alice Lee Kates' Obituary
Alice Lee Kates 81, of Bridgeton died suddenly Wednesday morning August 16, 2006 at her residence. Her death was unexpected.
Born in Alma , Georgia the daughter of the late Lenzy Sr. and Naomi Butler Jordan , and the wife of the late John Courson Kates Sr., she had been an area resident for most of her life.
Mrs. Kates had been a homemaker for the past thirty years and prior to had worked has a seamstress for the Major Clothing Co. in Bridgeton. She was also a member of the Second Pilgrim Baptist Church in Center Grove, which was the church her late father helped to build. She was very active at the Fairfield Adult Center, and she enjoyed knitting. Mrs. Kates had just returned home from a trip to Connecticut in which she and her family had celebrated at the Jordan family reunion.
Surviving her are seven sons John Kates Jr. and his wife Martha of Conn., Lenzy B. Kates of Bridgeton, Richard Kates and his wife Gloria of Vineland, Harry Kates and his wife Alicia of Somerdale, Raymond Kates of Bridgeton, Charlie Kates and his wife Cindy of Pittsgrove Twsp. , and Ralph Kates of Millville, three daughters Linda Rahming and her husband Alpohonso of Bridgeton, Pearl Jones of Millville, Marilyn Hudgon and her husband Roosevelt of Bridgeton, and a daughter in law Barbara Kates of Bridgeton., four brothers Lenzy Jordan Jr. of Fla., Walter Jordan of Conn., James Jordan of New Brunswick, NJ, and Eddy Jordan of Brotmanville, nine sisters Sadie Mae Coats of Fla., Elizabeth Kates of Ill., Thelma ?Marietta? Adams of Fla., Ruby Lee Stewart of Bridgeton, Athenia Williams of Conn., Vandella Bates of Bridgeton, Gertrude Simmons of Conn., Mary Francis Green of Conn., and Norma Holmes of Fla., 83 grand and great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was predeceased by her son in May Alexander Kates Sr. and her son in law Alfred Jones, and sisters Enease Jordan, Eva Mae Parrish, and Ethel Vaughns.
Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Thursday August 24, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. from the Glory Tabernacle Church 1018 Buckshutem Rd. Bridgeton. Mrs. Kates pastor, Rev. Robert Walters will officiate and assisting will be Rev. David Hadley. The interment will take place in Gouldtown Memorial Park, Fairfield Twsp.
Friends may call on Thursday morning from 10:00 to 12:00 p.m. at the church prior to the services
