Chaplain Lt. Col. Allen D. Ackley Jr. 81, of Ormond Beach, Fla. died Wednesday March 15, 2006 at his family homestead in Upper Deerfield Twsp. surrounded by his family. Born February 17, 1925 the son of the late Allen D. Sr. and Bessie nee Hitchner Ackley , he was the husband of the late Billye J.nee Rowland Ackley who died in 1979. Mr. Ackley was proud to have been a farm boy from Deerfield , who joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950, and was commissioned as a pilot in 1952 where he served in the 315 Air Division Far East Air Force flying C-46?s. His formal education included his entering Wheaton College and later Eastern Baptist Seminary, Columbia University in Decatur, Georgia, and he also attended Temple University School of Theology, in Philadelphia, Pa. He served as pastor of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church from 1960- 1964, and also during this time served as Chaplain for the 177 Tach. Fighter Group, in Pomona, NJ for 2 years. Also in 1960 he was recomissioned as Chaplain in the U.S. Air Force, and while on active duty served for 10 years in the United States, Greece, and Alaska, retiring in 1983 at Patrick AFB, Florida. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. He served as pastor of the Riverside Presbyterian Church in Daytona Beach , Fla. from 1976 -1988 and continued doing USAF Reserve duty at Patrick AFB, Fla. He was presently the assistant pastor of the Ormond Beach First United Methodist Church , Ormond Beach, Fla.. Chaplain Ackley was the host of the ?Words and Music? radio program since 1978, and also formerly served as the interim pastor at the Greenwich Presbyterian Church, in Greenwich. He was one of the very few double- rated officers in the history of the United States Air Force Reserves, earning the honor of both Chaplain and his Wings ranking. Surviving Chaplain Ackley are one brother Herbert M. Ackley of Woodstown and one sister Lillian S. Ackley of Upper Deerfield Twsp., and many nieces and nephews. Besides his wife he was predeceased by three brothers Chaplain Lt. Col. Robert H. Ackley, Donald B. Ackley, and John J. Ackley. Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Saturday March 18, 2006 from the Deerfield Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Ken Larter pastor of the church will conduct funeral services. The interment will take place in Deerfield Presbyterian Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday evening at the church from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and also Saturday morning one hour prior to the services at the church. In lieu of flowers, Chaplain Ackley requested that donations in his memory be made to MAP INTERNATIONAL Medical Assistance Program, PO Box 215000, Brunswick , GA 31521. Arrangements are under the direction of the SRAY-WEBSTER FUNERAL HOME 62 Landis Ave. at Carll?s Corner, Upper Deerfield Twsp.
